History of Adversane, West Sussex

An annual fair was held on September 12th each year in Adversane. The fair had been granted an annual charter and ran for many years, even during the Second World War when a single stall was erected to mark the day. The tradition sadly died out in the 1950s.
On fair day the villagers and farmers would display their prime stock - cattle, pigs horses and produce. Local village crafts would also be displayed. A pig would be roasted on a spit over an open fire. The spit was a chain driven affair with a handle to ensure the meat was evenly cooked. The fair also brought many attractions, the rides, roundabouts, swing boats and side stalls.
