Amberley Castle

Amberley Castle is in a dominant position overlooking the River Arun at its furthest navigable point. It was built around 1377 by William Rede, Bishop of Chichester. The Bishops of Chichester used it as a residence until the mid 1500s, tradition speaks of a siege during the Civil War which hastened the decay of the Castle.

It was restored in 1908 by the Duke of Norfolk. There are remains of a curtain wall and Gatehouse.

Amberley Castle now operates as a luxury hotel.
