Alfriston Clergy House

Alfriston Clergy House was the first property to be acquired by the National Trust. It was purchased in 1896 for £10.The house was originally built as an open hall, with single rooms on two stories  at either end.

In 1550s  the large open hall was  divided horizontally by inserting a new floor.  The restored house has this  floor has been omitted, giving the original open hall in the middle  of the house. Logs of wood lie ready in the middle of the floor for the  fire.

  • The chalk and sour milk floor in the hall
  • The oak leaf carving.
  • Alfriston's famous Judas Tree
  • Garden tours with the gardener every third Tuesday of the month
