Arundel Castle is one of the most impressive and complete castles remaining in Britain it is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and Earls of Arundel. The castle was built at the end of the 11th century by the Earl of Arundel, Roger de Montgomerie, known as Roger the Great de Montgomery. It was badly damaged in 1643 during the civil war and was restored by the 8th,11th and 15th Dukes during the 18th and 19th century.
The castle houses a collection of fine furniture dating from the 16th century. There are also displayed portraits by Van Dyke, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Mytens and Lawrence. Several personal possessions of Mary, Queen of Scots and a selection of heraldic items from the Duke of Norfolk's collection are also on view.
Each year the castle hosts the Arundel Festival which attracts many international artists.
